Choosing an international courier is not just about the cheapest per-kilogram rate — the wrong choice on service reliability, customs support, or destination coverage can cost far more in delays and failed deliveries than a slightly higher rate would have.

What to actually check before choosing

Destination coverage. Confirm the courier has genuine last-mile delivery capability in the specific destination country and, ideally, the specific city or region — not just a stated "we ship worldwide."

Customs clearance support. Ask whether the courier handles export customs clearance (CSB-IV/CSB-V filing) as part of the booking, or whether that's left to you. For most small shippers, a courier that bundles clearance into the booking is significantly simpler.

Transparent, all-in pricing. Compare quotes that include fuel surcharges and any remote-area fees, not just the headline base rate — two quotes that look similar upfront can differ substantially once surcharges are added.

Weight and dimension limits. Confirm the courier's maximum per-piece weight and dimensions match what you actually ship, and check how they calculate volumetric weight (the divisor used affects your cost).

Tracking and support. Real-time tracking with customs-stage visibility (not just "in transit") and responsive support for held shipments matters more once something goes wrong than it does when everything goes right.

Duty handling model. Understand whether duties are collected upfront (DDP — Delivered Duty Paid) or on delivery from the recipient (DDU/DAP). Since the 2025 suspension of the US de-minimis exemption, this choice materially affects the recipient's experience for US-bound shipments — an unexpected duty bill at the door is one of the most common causes of failed/refused deliveries.

Insurance options. For anything of meaningful value — jewellery, electronics, commercial samples — confirm insurance is available and understand what it actually covers before you need it.
