International Courier Charges
What actually drives international courier pricing: chargeable weight, destination zone, service level, and surcharges.
International courier pricing looks complicated because it isn't one number — it's built from several independent factors, and understanding each one is what lets you predict a shipment's cost before you book it, rather than being surprised at checkout.
What actually determines the price
Chargeable weight. Couriers bill on whichever is higher: the parcel's actual weight, or its volumetric (dimensional) weight. A large, light box (like a lampshade) can cost more to ship than a small, dense one (like a phone) of the same actual weight.
Destination zone. Courier networks group countries into pricing zones based on distance and how developed their delivery infrastructure is. Shipping to the US, UK, or UAE is typically cheaper per kilogram than shipping to a country with a thinner delivery network.
Service level. Express/priority services (2–4 business days) cost meaningfully more than economy or standard services (5–10+ business days), because they use premium air routing and priority customs handling.
Fuel and remote-area surcharges. Most international couriers apply a variable fuel surcharge on top of the base rate, and an additional surcharge if the delivery address falls outside a serviceable metro area in the destination country.
Duties and taxes. These are not part of the courier's charge, but they affect the total landed cost the recipient pays. Since the 2025 suspension of the US de-minimis exemption, for example, every US-bound parcel is now subject to duty assessment regardless of value — a cost that used to be avoidable under $800 no longer is. Insurance and declared value. Optional shipment insurance is usually priced as a percentage of the declared value, and is worth adding for anything commercially or personally valuable — see International Jewellery Shipping Cost for an example where this matters a lot.
A practical way to estimate cost
Because these factors interact (a light-but-bulky item to a far zone at express speed can cost several times more than the same actual weight shipped as a small, dense item at standard speed to a nearby zone), the only reliable way to get an accurate number is to check a live rate calculator with your real dimensions, weight, and destination rather than relying on a flat "per kg" rule of thumb.
