Restricted or Prohibited Items

Some items simply cannot be shipped to the USA under any circumstances (prohibited), and others can be shipped but require extra documentation, permits, or specific handling (restricted). Shipping a prohibited item, even unknowingly, can result in the parcel being seized and, in some cases, penalties for the shipper — always check before you book.

Generally prohibited for shipment to the USA

• Illegal drugs and narcotics
• Currency and negotiable instruments above declared-value thresholds without proper declaration
• Ivory, and products made from other endangered species protected under CITES
• Explosives, fireworks, and most hazardous/flammable materials
• Counterfeit goods and items infringing trademarks or copyrights
• Weapons, ammunition, and most weapon parts without the specific permits required

Generally restricted (shippable with conditions)

• Food items — many packaged foods can be shipped but are subject to FDA/USDA review; fresh produce, meat, and dairy are typically not permitted through standard courier channels
• Cosmetics and personal care items — generally permitted but can face FDA scrutiny for certain ingredients
• Electronics containing lithium batteries — permitted but require correct declaration and packaging per IATA dangerous goods rules; undeclared battery-containing shipments are a common cause of holds
• Jewellery and precious metals — permitted, but high-value shipments benefit from extra documentation and insurance; see Customs Rules for Jewellery Export
• Textiles and clothing — generally permitted; bulk commercial quantities may need additional compliance documentation
• Alcohol and tobacco — heavily restricted, generally not shippable through standard international courier services to individual consumers

US import rules are set and enforced by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and other federal agencies (FDA, USDA, and others depending on the product), and specific rules can change. Always verify the current status of your specific product with your courier before booking, especially for anything in a regulated category — food, cosmetics, batteries, or anything of high value.

What happens if a restricted item isn't properly declared

At best, expect a delay while the parcel is reviewed and additional documentation is requested. At worst, the item can be seized or returned to the sender at the shipper's cost. Declaring contents accurately and checking restrictions before booking is significantly cheaper than dealing with a seizure after the fact.
