India is one of the largest exporters of gems and jewellery in the world, and a growing share of that trade now moves through courier and small-parcel channels rather than only bulk cargo — from independent jewellery sellers shipping to international buyers, to designers fulfilling ecommerce orders abroad.
Jewellery is also one of the most heavily scrutinised categories at customs, on both the Indian export side and the destination country's import side, because of its value density and the regulatory frameworks around precious metals and gemstones (hallmarking, the Kimberley Process for rough diamonds, and country-specific import duty on precious metals).
A significant recent change: the ₹10 lakh (₹1,000,000) value cap that previously restricted how much jewellery could be exported via registered courier has been removed effective 1 April 2026, opening courier-mode export to higher-value jewellery shipments that previously had to go through cargo. GJEPC (the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council) continues to push for the same risk-based, simplified norms already available to other courier exporters.
Guides in this hub
This hub covers how to ship jewellery internationally from India, the specific export documentation and registrations you need (including GJEPC/RCMC membership), realistic shipping cost expectations for high-value, low-weight parcels, secure packing practices, and the customs rules — Indian and destination-side — that apply specifically to jewellery.
For general courier mechanics that also apply to jewellery shipments (volumetric weight, delivery times), see the International Shipping hub.
